Today, for those wanting a little more adventure thantrekking in theEverest region, Island Peak Climbing presents a perfect opportunity.

Island peak was named thus by Eric Shipton’s party as this peak in the middle of Chhukung valley seemed like an island in a sea of ice. It was later given the local name Imja Tse but the first name stuck and that is what most people know to call it.

Our journey begins from the bustling city of Kathmandu, an ancient city rich in culture, art and architecture. We spend a day exploring this city. Next day, a short scenic flight takes us to Lukla, the starting point for all adventures in Everest region. Our hardships, too, begin here.We trek from Lukla to Phakding to Namche Bazzar, the common route taken by all trekkers. Our trail then deviates to Dole as we head to Gokyo Ri. It is possible to see four of the highest peaks in the world from Gokyo Ri- Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu. Then, we trek past the Cho La Pass, heading toward Everest Base Camp (EBC), the most popular destination for trekkers. We will also be climbing to Kalapathar for the best view of Mount Everest. Then, finally on the 15th day, after the series ofall the best that this region has to offer, we reach the valley of Chukkung from where we will trek to the base camp of Island Peak and then summit it.We will be returning via Tengboche, a different route that will meet Namche Bazzar.

This special itinerary takes you into and through all the best places in Everest. Welcome to Kathmandu
Our friendly staff from Himalayan Advisor will be awaiting your arrival at the Tribhuwan International Airport from where we will help you into your hotel in Thamel. After checking in, you could rest or stroll around the bustling city of Kathmandu. Kathmandu is the commercial and cultural hub of Nepal. Be amazed by the labyrinth of crisscrossing streets that seems to be in a festive mood, always. Overnight in the hotel after a delicious meal of Nepali cuisine.

Rock Climbing Course or Sightseeing in Kathmandu
We could take you for a simple rock climbing course in or around Kathmandu. The course will prepare you for the upcoming challenges as some experience in using different equipment like rope, ice axe, crampons etc. will be gained.

Or, we could go for a sightseeing tour around Kathmandu. Kathmandu City has the highest density of historical and religious monuments. Seven of them are enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nepal being a religiously diverse country, one can see the harmonious blend of these religions in such monuments, especially Buddhism, Hinduism and Tantrism.  Another night in Kathmandu.

Fly to Lukla and Trek to Phakding
Early in the morning, after breakfast, we will drive to the airport to catch a domestic flight to Lukla. This short flight is the most scenic flight- snow white peaks above and lush green valley below. Then, we begin our trek from Lukla to Phakding by first descending about 200m towards Dudh Koshi River below. After crossing the first of many suspension bridges to come, we reach Ghat, a Buddhist village. The trail from here starts to gain in altitude and we finally arrive at the beautiful Phakding village. This is a short 2-3 hour trek that will already have introduced to you the culture here through many Chortens, prayer flags, Mani stones, prayer wheels etc. We stay the night in Phakding.

    Trek to Namche Bazaar
We continue on our journey to Island Peak. We hike through the forest of pine, rhododendron, juniper and fir, walk through Sherpa villages, and cross bridges to reach Monjo. The official entrance to Sagarmatha National park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is some distance away from Monjo. At the entrance, our permits will be checked. After two more bridges and steady ascent we will reach Namche Bazaar, a prosperous Sherpa village and an important trading center in the Khumbu Region. One can get their first glimpse of Mount Everest from Namche. A magnificent view of Mt. Thamserku (6608m) about 40min into today’s trek is another highlight of this journey.

    Acclimatization at Namche Bazaar
We wake up to the sunrise surrounded by snowy summits. Today is acclimatization day in Namche. The best way to spend an acclimatization day is to stay active by travelling high and sleeping low. We climb steeply out of Namche to the Everest View Hotel where we can get wonderful views of Everest and Ama Dablam. We can also trek to the surrounding villages of Thame and Khumjung. These short hikes are designed to give our body time to get used to high-altitude trekking. In the evening we can explore the colorful Namche Bazaar filled with a variety of shops, restaurants and bakeries. Overnight at a Teahouse in Namche Bazaar.

    Namche to Dole
Today’s end destination is Dole. It can be an interesting trip as we may spot different wildlife like deer, mountain goats, pheasants etc. We follow a pretty easy path that goes downwards to Kyangjuma village. It then takes us to Sanasa. Here, the path forks, one going to Everest Base Camp (EBC) and the other to Gokyo Ri. We take the Gokyo Ri route and climb up to Mong la Pass (3,972m) on a stone staircase built into the cliff. From the top of the pass, we can enjoy a good view of Mt. Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Tawoche and others. After another set of down and up-up we will reach Dole, the village we will be spending the night in.

    Dole to Machhermo
From Dole, we will steadily ascend to Lhabarma (4,220m) and higher up to Luza (4,360m). The path offers a good view of Mt. Thamserku, Kangtega and Cho Oyu. We continue to go higher still, along the hillside till the village of Macchermo. This is the last major settlement before Gokyo. In 1974, a Sherpa woman and her three yaks were attacked by a yeti here, so they say. Be careful. Overnight in a teahouse in Machhermo.

    Machhermo to Gokyo
More climbing through the scenic ridge, until we reach a Chorten and then to Pangka (4,390m). After a brief drop towards the river, the trail continues up again and we walk along the steep moraine of Ngozumpa Glacier (Largest glacier in Nepal). It opens up into Gokyo valley. We then come across Lake Longpongo, Taboche Tsho and Dudh Pokhari in turn; feast your eyes on these beautiful turquoise waters. Also, the stunning little Gokyo village where we will be lodging for the night is a collection of few stone houses near Dudh Pokhari with Cho Oyu in the backdrop. Enjoy your stay in this little heaven.

Hike to Gokyo Ri and Trek to Thanak
Today is an acclimatization day. This means climb high but sleep low. We will climb Gokyo Ri (5,480m) which is a 3-4 hours of steep climb. But, the spectacular view of mountains like Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, Kangtega, Makalu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Everest, Changtse etc. and the full picture of Gokyo village next to Dudh Pokhari with Ama Dablam in the background  that you get from the top are worth every drop of sweat. We will then head to Thanak by climbing out of Gokyo to the mountain on the other side and traveling down towards this small settlement. Overnight in Thanak.

Thanak to Cho-la Pass and Dzongla
Cho-la Pass (5,367m) is another highlight of this trip. We make a steep ascent, continuously climbing until we find ourselves walking alongside a frozen lake. We will soon see prayer flags that indicates we are now at the top of the pass. From here, we can see peaks like Ama Dablam, Lobuche, Baruntse, Cholatse and others. We then make a steep descent to reach Dzongla, a beautiful valley with a view of numerous peaks. Climbing over the pass can be a bit difficult due to snow and ice.

    Dzongla to Gorakshep
Gorakshep is actually a frozen lakebed covered with sand. It has a small temporary settlement that provides lodging to the trekkers going to EBC. We climb down from Dzongla and walk a grassy trail. Lobuche, Ama Dablam, Kangtega and Thamserku Taboche peaks keep us company. After a while, we follow the curving trail to North that eventually leads down to the valley and to Lobuche. From Lobuche, we head out into the moraine of Khumbu glacier. Gorakshep is now only a little away.

Trek to EBC (5,316m) and back to Gorakshep
This morning, we will head to the Everest Base Camp after breakfast. Trek to EBC is one of the most popular trail in Nepal and it is included in our trip to Island Peak.  We walk for 2-3 hour following Khumbu ice fall and passing through rocky terrain, moraine and streams. Follow your guide. The trail here changes every year due to the movement of the glacier. We trek back to Gorakshep for the night.

Kalapathar hike and Descent to Dingboche
Kalapathar at the height of 5,643m is a vantage point for the best view of Mt. Everest. Many people do this hike. It is not very steep but can still be difficult because of the high altitude thin air. From the top, the view is unforgettable, just amazing. Mount Everest, panoramic view of different peaks, the base camp, Khumbu glacier and moraine, you can see it all. Then, we descent to Dingboche village and spend the night in a teahouse there.

    Dingboche to Chhukung Valley
Today, we will hike for 2-3 hours only, to the hidden valley Chhukung. The trail is easy, a gentle climb. Chhukung is a beautiful village. You can see mountains like Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Imja Tse up-close. Once in Chhukung, we can rest and prepare for camping and climbing tomorrow.

Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp
In the morning, after breakfast, we head south and then turn east. We will be walking along streams and past glacier moraines before reaching the main valley where we will camp. From here, we see the southwestern face of Island Peak.

Rest at Island Peak Base Camp
Today we will climb to second base camp or high camp. It takes only 2-3hours. We will be hiking through narrow slopes that open into a rocky terrain. This rocky terrain is the second camp. We will rest here and camp for the night.

Island Peak Base camp to Summit to Chhukung
Finally! We will be climbing Island Peak. This is the long awaited moment. We begin our climb early in the morning. We climb a rock gully, follow a ridgeline to the summit glacier and up a steep slope to the summit. Enjoy the amazing view of mountains all around you. Then, we will climb down all the way back to the 1st base camp and trek back to chhukung.

    Reserve Day for Unforeseen Condition
There is no guarantee that everything will go according to the plan. This is a contingency day. The weather might not be perfect to summit Island Peak the day we plan. We will summit it the next day. Some people can require extra day to acclimatize properly or the flight to or from Lukla can be canceled. This is a day separated for such inconsistencies.

    Chhukung to Tengboche
An easy descent and climb to Tengboche. Tengboche is the next stop from Namche Bazaar if we take the popular route to EBC instead of Gokyo Ri. It is a cluster of really few buildings including the famous Tengboche monastery. A bakery here is also famous for its services.

    Tengboche to Namche Bazaar
From Tengboche, the trail goes downwards to a small settlement Phungithanka and then towards Sanasa from where we retrace our steps back to Namche Bazaar.

    Namche to Lukla
Our journey is coming to an end. After a 6-7 hour descent, we reach Lukla, the starting point. This is your last day in the mountains. Celebrate your success and enjoy.

    Flight to Kathmandu
We take an early flight back to Kathmandu. You will be transferred into your hotel. Today is a rest day.

    Leisure at Kathmandu
Leisure day in Kathmandu can be spent as you wish. You can go and explore the rest of the city or choose to stay in your hotel room all day. Buy souvenirs, stroll around or relax in spa and the likes. Today is a free day. It is your last day in Nepal. In the evening- preparation for the departure tomorrow.

    Departure from Kathmandu
Our staff from Himalayan Advisor will transfer you to the international airport for your flight home. Keep us in mind for future trips in Nepal.

How fit should I be for Island Peak Climbing?

Island Peak climbing is very strenuous. You should be reasonably fit, healthy and have a lot of stamina. You should be mentally prepared as well, for the hardships and discomforts of this journey.

What skills do I need for Island Peak Climbing?

It is not a very technical climb and, therefore, previous experience is not required. All the skills required such as with ropes, harness, ice pick etc. will be taught in the base camp. We also have a rock climbing course incorporated in our itinerary that will provide enough experience.

For the stamina, you need to start about 3-4 months earlier. You could go for long walks or do aerobics, anything that will get you used to exhausting physical energy. By practice, you will become capable of enduring strenuous activities for a longer time. Walking will be the best option. Add a lot of ups and downs to it.

What is the maximum altitude reached and risks of Altitude Sickness involved?

The maximum altitude we will be climbing to is 6,189m, the height of Island Peak. About Altitude Sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), anyone going over 2,400m is susceptible to it. Therefore, we will be taking proper precautions. The itinerary is designed to acclimatize us properly. Our guides are trained to analyze signs of AMS and provide immediate aid.  Please report any discomfort or AMS symptoms like nausea, vomiting, headache, lack of appetite and lethargy to your guide and do not try to test your limit when it comes to AMS. Please remember that AMS can be fatal.

What type of food can I expect during the trek?
The menu in the tea houses to Island Peak offers a range of vegetarian options from the typical Dal Bhat Tarkari (Lentil soup, stemmed rice and vegetable curry) and momo to pizza, apple pie, pancakes etc. Noodles, potatoes, eggs and soup prepared in different ways are common. Non veg options are also available. However, sticking to a vegetarian diet is suggested.  Garlic is used in most dishes which is good as garlic is believed to be effective against AMS.

During camping, our cooks will be making delicious and healthy food for us.

What are the clothing and equipment requirements during the Trek?

The Himalayas are rather unpredictable where we could be exposed to bad weather at any time, so be prepared for all weathers and temperatures. The key to staying comfortable during the trek is by layering. Get versatile layers that mix and match to create the right amount of insulation, ventilation and weather protection.  We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on your registration. We are always available if you need advice.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Your safety and health is of paramount concerns to us. In case of emergency, we provide backup staff and helicopter rescue services. All our guides and leaders are well trained in first aid and mountain rescues. Any safety concerns are speedily dealt with.

    Environmental Concerns:

Himalayan Advisor is highly concerned about the environment it operates on. We believe  in protecting  our  natural  environment  and  take  utmost  care  that  our  actions  do  not  harm the environment. We actively participate in environmental protection and preservation campaign and encourage everyone to do so.
